If it can only touch the edge of space and must remain in orbit of it's planet of origin, it's not really a space ship.Īlso, I read once in PopSci (maybe?) that the most realistic spaceship ever depicted in a film or tv show was the Discovery from 2001 (I read this in the early 90's).

If a vessel can leave the gravitational pull of it's planet of origin, it's a space ship. If a vessel can traverse oceans, it's a ship, if it has to stay by the coast and rivers, it's a boat (exclude submarines in this analogy).

I think, since naval terms are already used for space-faring, we should do it just like the sea. The space shuttle's purpose is to only go to the very edge of space and our atmosphere.
